Composition Shingles

Composition shingles are the most popular roofing material used on today’s homes. Due to their ease of access and cost of installation. There is two types of shingles, Three-Tab shingles and Architectural shingles.

Three-tab shingles are made of 3 constant tabs per shingle. There is no aesthetic to this roof, taking a step back you won’t see a pattern or style that gives your home that curb appeal. It is the most budget friendly shingle between the two types due to the quality of material, these roofs will give you between 12-18 years in Texas climate. 

Architectural shingles

Architectural shingles are composed of two shingle strips laminated together to make one shingle. The shape and size of these can vary depending on the design you choose. Architectural shingles have a longer lifespan of 20-30 years in Texas climate. They are also many styles available to choose from when compared to three-tab shingles.

Architectural shingles are made up of  the 30 year shingles like GAF Timberline & Certainteed Landmark AR series and the designer shingles like GAF Camelot and Certainteed Presidential series.  Each shingle manufacturer has a couple of shingle series, each with different styles and prices.  Certainteed and GAF have the most variety to choose from when compared to IKO, Owens Corning, and Tamko.

Ease of access

Due to composition shingles being the most used roofing product, you can have the one you’re looking for installed in a matter of days. Making it the fastest when compared to standing seam which takes 1-3 weeks depending on size of home, slate more than 4 weeks as it has to come from Europe or other states. 

Installation

Installation of composition shingles is not as complex as other roofing materials. It can even be a diy project if you have the rights tools and attire to work on the roof (consult a professional before). However proper installation its always the key, wrong nail placement or improper installation of metal flashing can cause leaks down the road.
